Mommy Makeover

At his practice in Dallas and Frisco, Texas, Dr. Kenkel performs "mommy makeover" procedures for women who need help restoring their bodies after the changes brought on by motherhood. After childbirth and breast feeding, the stretching of breast tissue, abdominal muscles, and tummy skin can leave new mothers with a figure that no longer resembles the body they had prior to pregnancy. The mommy makeover is a combination of procedures designed to address the breasts and the abdomen so that moms can see dramatic improvement after only one operation and recovery period.

Dr. Kenkel is happy to discuss the benefits of mommy makeover surgery in more detail. You can request a consultation or give us a call at (214) 645-3112 to schedule an appointment.

Am I a good mommy makeover candidate?

As the name suggests, women who are dissatisfied with the way their bodies have been affected by pregnancy are ideal candidates for mommy makeover surgery. A typical mommy makeover includes some combination of these procedures:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast lift (mastopexy)
  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  • Liposuction

Depending on what Dr. Kenkel recommends during your consultation, your mommy makeover can address sagging breast tissue, lost breast volume, excess tummy skin, and loose abdominal muscles.

What should I expect from my consultation?

First and foremost, you should expect to have Dr. Kenkel's full attention. The consultation is your time to share what has motivated you to consider the procedure, any concerns you may have, and most importantly, your ideal outcome.

Dr. Kenkel will listen intently and then examine your breasts and abdomen. Together, you will decide on the combination of procedures that best matches your aesthetic goals. Because localized deposits of fat often develop after pregnancy as well, Dr. Kenkel frequently performs liposuction to refine the contours of the waist, flanks, hips or thighs.

Once you meet with Dr. Kenkel, we will take photos of your breasts and abdomen to save in your file. You will also talk with Debbie, our coordinator, about pricing and financing. She will also be happy to answer any additional questions you may have about the surgery.

What are my options for breast enhancement?

After childbirth and breastfeeding, women commonly experience a loss in breast volume, a descent of the breast tissue, or both. Dr. Kenkel can correct this with 2 different approaches, depending on the volume that remains.

If you have sufficient remaining volume, Dr. Kenkel can reshape and lift the breasts and nipple/areola complex, so they sit at a more youthful position on the chest. If you have lost volume that you would like to see restored, Dr. Kenkel can combine breast augmentation and lift to create a fuller contour, particularly in the upper pole.

With breast surgery, you have multiple decisions to make about incisions and implants. For a more in-depth look at your options, read more about breast enhancement.

How will the surgery improve my abdomen?

Pregnancy commonly leads to redundant skin in the abdominal area, as well as weakened abdominal muscles. In a mommy makeover, Dr. Kenkel removes the excess skin and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. Liposuction may be performed at the same time. This results in a flatter, firmer look and slimmer waist. If stretch marks are present on the abdomen, many of them will be removed with the excess skin. For more specifics on how the surgery itself is performed, take a look at the tummy tuck page.

What happens on the day of surgery?

Your mommy makeover is performed here at UT Southwestern, and most patients spend a night or so in the onsite Medallion Guest Suites, which provides a hotel-like environment with full-time nursing care. Dr. Kenkel emphasizes that you should ask a friend or family member help you around the house for several days.

We have created an informative document that details how you can prepare for your mommy makeover. For example, if you're a smoker, you'll need to stop at least 1 month prior to your surgery. If you're feeling anxious about surgery, we can administer medication prior to your procedure to help you relax.

What will my recovery be like?

Pain, soreness, and swelling are all normal parts of a healthy recovery. Dr. Kenkel will prescribe pain medication to help you feel more comfortable in the days following your surgery.

You will be going home with surgical dressing to support the new shape and minimize swelling. You will also need to wear a compression garment for added abdominal support. Dr. Kenkel will advise you on how long you will need it, but generally speaking, you can expect to wear it for up to a month.

You will need to take about 2 to 3 weeks off from work. Use that time to rest — but don't be sedentary. Start with short, easy walks around the house, and gradually add more activity as you begin to feel more like yourself. For the first 5 to 7 days, your abdominal skin will be too tight to allow you to stand fully upright. Be mindful of this as you walk around in that first week. That said, avoid strenuous activity and rigorous exercise for a minimum of 3 weeks.

What should I know about the results?

Dr. Kenkel will do everything possible to make scarring as discreet as possible by following the bikini line for your tummy tuck and making any breast enhancement incisions minimal. Scars can take months to fully heal, and swelling may come and go for months, too; it's a gradual process.

Lasting, lifelong improvements from mommy makeover surgery are certainly possible, but remember that maintaining your new figure requires a disciplined diet and exercise regimen. Your procedure is the beginning, but it's a commitment to a healthy lifestyle that will keep the results looking great for years to come.

How many visits will I have following surgery?

Dr. Kenkel will see you the day after your surgery, then again 3 to 4 days after surgery. In another 7 to 10 days, he will see you to evaluate your incision and your activity. Of course, this time is also for you to bring any questions or concerns you may have.

A typical schedule for subsequent visits would be at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after your surgery. This gives Dr. Kenkel a regularly scheduled time to monitor your results and make sure you're progressing well toward a full recovery.

How much does a mommy makeover cost?

Because every cosmetic surgery procedure is tailored to the needs of the patient, it's not possible to offer a complete quote for mommy makeover surgery. In your consultation, we will provide a written estimate once Dr. Kenkel has had time to sit down with you, discuss your goals, and examine your breasts and abdomen. This estimate will reflect the specifics of your surgery, as well as fees associated with the operating facility, anesthesia, implants, and more. If you decide to move forward with a mommy makeover, we do ask that you pay a $500 deposit to reserve your surgery date.
