There have been some remarkable advances in recent years in nonsurgical skin tightening treatments, such as Ultherapy® and ThermiRF®. At our Dallas, TX, practice, Dr. Kenkel uses these technologies to help stimulate collagen production and restore skin firmness and tone, for visible improvements that can take years off of your appearance.
Am I a good candidate for skin tightening?
For skin tightening treatments, the best candidates have good skin quality with only mild to moderate laxity. In particular, skin tightening is a good option for patients who want firmer, more lifted skin in these areas:
- On the cheek
- Along the jawline
- On the neck
- Under the chin
Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to create small, discrete areas of injury within the skin. ThermiRF uses a radiofrequency probe to target the area below the skin, applying heat to create an injury and stimulate collagen response. ThermiRF is safe to use in other areas of the body, as well, such as the upper arms, the bra area, or the thighs.
What should I expect from my consultation?
Dr. Kenkel sees the consultation as your opportunity to express what you hope to get out of skin rejuvenation treatment. During the consultation, his job is primarily to answer your questions, alleviate your concerns, and listen as you explain your goals for the treatment.
Dr. Kenkel personally performs all skin tightening treatments and is well versed in their capabilities. He was involved in the largest Ulthera® clinical study, which led to FDA approval for Ultherapy on the jowls and neck. He has been working with Ultherapy in Dallas since 2010.
The consultation is also Dr. Kenkel's time to examine your face and neck. He discusses the results you can expect from treatment — and, depending on your goals, he determines whether you are a candidate for skin tightening procedures or whether surgical intervention would be necessary to achieve the goals you want.
Once you meet with Dr. Kenkel, we will take photos of your treatment areas to save in your file. You will also talk with Debbie, our coordinator, about pricing and financing. She will also be happy to answer any lingering questions you may have about skin tightening treatments.
What are Ultherapy and ThermiRF?
In both of these treatments, the goal is to stimulate the production of new collagen, the natural protein that keeps skin toned. Unlike a laser skin resurfacing procedure, neither Ultherapy nor ThermiRF affect the outer layer of skin. Instead, these treatments use different types of energy to target deeper tissue and promote collagen growth.
Ultherapy works by delivering ultrasound energy to the deeper layers of the skin. This stimulation of new collagen starts to improve the appearance of loose skin and laxity over a period of 2 to 3 months. Further improvements can appear up to 6 months following treatment.
ThermiRF delivers radiofrequency energy beneath the skin to promote gradual collagen growth, which tightens skin and improves fine wrinkles on the lower face and neck. What happens during a treatment session?
Your session lasts up to 60 minutes, depending on how much of the face and neck will be treated. In most cases, Dr. Kenkel will use a local anesthetic to help control discomfort during the procedure. During treatment, Dr. Kenkel uses a handpiece to deliver energy to the tissue layers underneath the skin. This stimulates the growth of new collagen in the target areas, which leads to firmer, smoother skin.
In both treatments, patients report a warm sensation; some patients report sensitivity along the bony areas of the eye socket and jawline. He strives to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
Should I expect downtime or side effects?
With skin tightening treatments, there is a small amount of swelling noted for a few days. You may resume your normal activities within 4 hours of treatment. Some swelling and redness in the treated areas is normal, but both should recede fully within a few days. What should I know about the results?
In most cases, patients are happy with the results after just 1 session, but some patients do require additional sessions to get their desired outcome.
Because these treatments stimulate natural healing processes, the results are subtle and develop gradually. The full effects of a treatment usually take 3 to 6 months to appear.
How much do skin tightening treatments cost?
With both Ultherapy and ThermiRF, treatments vary from patient to patient. This makes it difficult to accurately provide a quote without first meeting with the patient. In your consultation, Dr. Kenkel will assess your goals, examine your face and neck, and determine a treatment plan that we can then use as the basis for a written estimate. This estimate will reflect the specifics of your treatment, as well as the fees associated with anesthesia and more. If you decide to pursue a skin tightening treatment, we do ask that you provide a $500 deposit to reserve your session.
