What can be done to lessen the appearance of old scars? Is there a difference in treatment with skin types?

Jeffrey Kenkel, MD

Once you have a scar, you will always have it. That being said, there are a few things we can do to improve scars.
Color is one thing we can change. Scars that are red or pigmented may benefit from treatment with a laser or light device.
Scars that are raised may also benefit from these treatments or may require injections to soften and flatten them.
There are a lot of products out there that claim to “improve” or make scars “disappear”. Most of these are not well tested scientifically and lack data to back up their claims.
Seeing your plastic surgeon will allow you to be objectively assessed and determine what type of treatment plan you may benefit from. laser_color
