How Are Male Facelifts Different? Exploring Facial Rejuvenation Options for Men

Attractive couple smiling (models)

If your face no longer reflects the energy and confidence you feel on the inside, you might be wondering what your options are. Men and women age differently, and that means facial rejuvenation—including facelifts—should be tailored specifically to your features, goals, and lifestyle. At my Dallas plastic surgery practice, I offer a full spectrum of options—from less invasive treatments to surgical male facelifts—designed to help men look naturally refreshed, not overdone.

How Do Men Age Differently Than Women?

Men typically have thicker skin, stronger facial bones, and more facial hair than women. As a result, they often develop deeper creases and more visible sagging in the lower face and neck. These differences, along with distinct aesthetic goals, mean we must approach male facial rejuvenation with precision and nuance.

Male vs female facial structure differences

When you visit my Dallas facial plastic surgery practice for a total facial rejuvenation or facelift, it’s essential to reflect on the aspects of your appearance that concern you most and how they impact your personal and professional life.

What Factors Contribute to Aging?

Both men and women experience similar signs of aging, influenced by several key factors over time:

  1. Sun Exposure – The amount of time you spend in the sun and how well you protect your skin greatly affects its condition. Generally, skin tends to thin as we age, making sun protection crucial.
  2. Volume Loss – As we age, we gradually lose volume in our faces, often becoming noticeable in our late 30s and 40s. This typically affects the area below the eyes, along the nasolabial folds, and at the corners of the mouth. Over time, this volume loss can extend to other facial areas, including the jawline, lips, temples, and around the eyes.
  3. Effects of Gravity – The combination of volume loss and the decline in collagen and elastin results in sagging skin. This can affect various features, including brows, eyelids, mouth, cheeks, jawline, and neck. Even the nose can show signs of aging!

Everyone ages at their own pace, which is why I provide personalized solutions tailored to your unique needs and aesthetic aspirations.

Nonsurgical, Science-Backed Facial Rejuvenation Options For Men

Skincare guided by our aestheticians is recommended for any patient at any age. For younger patients, it may consist of a good cleanser and sunblock. As we age, we incorporate antioxidants into our skincare routine to help protect the skin. Additionally, a Retinol or Retin-A product will help skin turnover and build collagen. Other treatments we offer in the office may include  the following:

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL, BBL) – this is a broad-spectrum light that targets red and brown pigments in the skin and recovery requires minimal downtime.
  • Chemical Peels – these office-based treatments help to more aggressively exfoliate the skin allowing it to  renew. They require 2-5 days of peeling.
  • Moxi® or HALO® – these milder lasers can be used with just a topical anesthetic and refine the surface of the skin by improving color and texture.
  • Hair Reductionsome men prefer to eliminate unwanted body hair in areas such as their face, neck, chest and back. Patients with darker hair may be candidates for this procedure which requires a few visits to treat each area but has no downtime.
  • Neck Liposuctionsome men have fullness in the neck due to fatty deposits. In these cases, liposuction can be performed in the office requiring 3-5 days of downtime to improve swelling and redness.

Surgical Rejuvenation

What Is a SMAS Facelift, and Why Is It Ideal for Men?

When surgery becomes the best path forward, the SMAS facelift is my gold-standard technique. The SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer is a network of fibrous tissue beneath the skin that supports facial structure. Lifting this deeper layer—rather than just the skin—produces longer-lasting, more natural-looking results.

In male patients, I focus on refining the lower face and neck. By lifting strategically and preserving the square jawline, we enhance masculine features rather than softening them. This type of male facelift helps define the neck and jaw while avoiding an overly tight or pulled look.

Male Facelift Results

Understanding the distinct differences and aesthetic goals for masculine versus feminine faces is essential. Many unnatural outcomes stem from neglecting these differences or applying too much tension to the skin to achieve lift. This approach often results in a distorted appearance and unsightly, visible scars.

Recovery Time After a Facelift

Our facelift patients enjoy an overnight stay at Clements University Hospital, where they receive comprehensive supervision. After surgery, we remove the bulky dressing and fit you with a Velcro chin strap for neck compression.

You’ll leave with a drain tube that will remain in place for about 4 to 5 days, and your sutures will typically be removed around 7 days post-surgery.

Our aim is for you to feel confident going out in public within two weeks. If you also undergo eyelid surgery (upper or lower blepharoplasty), your recovery time may extend by about another week. We address more facelift-related questions in this blog post.

Both male and female facelift patients can typically resume physical activities after two to three weeks. Some swelling, especially in the cheeks and under the chin, may persist for up to two months.
