BOTOX® Cosmetic
Botulinum toxin injections are a simple, nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is also used off-label to soften smile lines around the eyes and smooth the horizontal wrinkles in the brow. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Dr. Jeffrey Kenkel is a *Board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery. He is Vice-Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Director of the Clinical Center for Cosmetic Laser Treatment at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Am I a good candidate for the surgery?
There are very few restrictions regarding botulinum toxin injections like BOTOX® Cosmetic. Patients who are pregnant or have a neurological disease should not be treated. If you are healthy and have no underlying health problems you should be a good candidate.
This procedure will not improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. It also will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a face or brow lift. Understanding the limitations of BOTOX® Cosmetic and having reasonable expectations can help make you a good candidate.
How is the procedure performed?
Using a tiny micro-needle, a very small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected, very precisely, into several areas on the face. The most typical areas are the frown line between the eyebrows, the forehead's horizontal lines and the smile lines around the eyes.
Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic is used, there is minimal pain associated with this procedure. There is an initial minor sting for a few seconds but once the injection is complete there is usually no discomfort. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and you can resume normal activities immediately.
What should I know about my results?
The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic usually occur within 48 hours and last three to five months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic may begin to last longer, sometimes up to six to eight months.
What does the procedure cost?
The procedure is paid the day of the appointment. Cost varies according to the number of areas treated. Checks, money orders, cash and credit cards may be used for payment. You may call the Plastic Surgery Clinic (214) 645-2353 to find out the cost of the procedure.
